The Blasters on the Dick Clark show. This was from their first (of two) appearances on the show. Dave says: "At first I didn't want to appear on American Bandstand because I thought it might be corny and people might accuse of The Blasters of selling out but then I figured that many of my musical idols had no such qualms about being on the show back in the late 50's and early 60's. Dick Clark was actually a very kind and nice guy to us. He even remembered having Lee Allen on American Bandstand back in the late 50's when Lee had his own instrumental hit, Walkin' With Mister Lee. Years later I saw Dick Clark at the third Farm Aid Concert and he walked right up to me and said, `Hey Dave, how've ya been?` Nice guy, at least to me anyway." Photo taken by Gary Leonard. |
Lee Allen, Carl Perkins, Dave, and Phil at a taping of the old PBS show, Soundstage. They recorded two nights of live shows at the Club Metro in Chicago which were edited down for a one hour broadcast. "It was a great honor and kick for us to have Willie Dixon and Carl Perkins as our special guests and to be able to play with them on that show. The only drag was when the film was edited the TV people only used one of the nine songs we taped backing up Carl and only two of the three songs with Willie. I have a couple bootleg copies of the TV show but I would love to find an audio tape of those missing songs. Probably long consigned to a garbage can in some editing room never to be seen or heard again." This photo was also taken by Gary Leonard. |
Phil and Dave with one of Dave's "favorite rock and roll/rythym and blues songwriters and singers, Hank Ballard. He wrote Work With Me Annie, Annie Had A Baby, Annie's Aunt Fannie, Sexy Ways, Thrill On The Hill, Finger Poppin' Time, Hoochie Coochie Coo, The Twist (Yeah, that Twist) and many more greasy, sexy groovers. The Blasters did a few gigs backing up Hank and The Midnighters (His back-up vocalists) and I dug him so much I named my first solo band The Allnighters in loving tribute to him." |
The fun-loving Pleasure Barons during their second (and last) tour with John Doe, Rosie Flores, and Katy Moffat joining the original tour survivors: Dave, Country Dick Montana, and Mojo Nixon. "Country Dick passed away not long after the tour. If you never saw, met or heard Dick, he was one of those larger than life, Paul Bunyan/Pecos Bill, folk tale characters come to life. Years ago, at a time in my life when money and friends were hard to find, Dick was one of the few people who kept me going and wouldn't let me quit. He was also one of the sweetest, funniest, craziest people I ever known. I miss him everyday." Photo by Beth Herzhaft. |
The Guilty Men at the last Jack's gig before they closed in early 2000. "Left to right (I think) are rugged outdoorsman Gregory Boaz, `The Pick of The Woody Sticks` Bobby Lloyd Hicks, Eddie Jennings (owner and guiding light of Jack's), me, fiddle virtuouso Brantley Kearns, the soulful Joe Terry and great singer-songwriter/rattlesnake killer Rick Shea. Gregory also recently killed a rattlesnake in the chicken coop on his Big Bear property. He and Rick are starting a club I guess. Steve Smith took the photo." |
Dave and Chris Gaffney, also from the last show at the 'shack. "It's my favorite photo of either one of us. Get a load of the mugs on those two guys. Kurt Mahoney took this one." |
